Green cats?

Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day, and that got me thinking about green cats, so I went online to find out if there was ever a green cat.

Are green cats real?

The first thing I found was a green cat who mysteriously appeared in Bulgaria. I even found this video where you can see the green cat, along with a more traditionally colored orange friend!

According to UK's Daily mail, people originally thought that the cat was dyed green as part of a joke, but it was later discovered that she liked to sleep at a construction yard and was picking up the green coloring from paint there. She then disappeared for a few days, and people started worrying that her fame had made her a target, so when she reappeared, an animal rescue group gave her a bath and washed out most of her green, except some tinges around the ears and chest. The green cat had caused such a buzz that they also warned against dyeing or painting your own cat in hopes of becoming internet famous! According to catster.com, the chemicals used to dye hair might be too harsh for our feline friends, plus you know how cats like to groom themselves, so then, not only do they have chemicals on their skin and fur, they can ingest them as well! So, it's not recommended to try to create your own green cat!

I did find another instance of a green cat, and this one seems to have been born with the green tint! The green kitten was born in Denmark in 1995. In the video below, they call her Verdigris Kitty, but other websites seem to call her "Miss Greeny".

In this case, the green cat fur seems to have stemmed from high levels of copper in the water and as the cat moved away from the high copper content watter the green grew out and it was replaced by a more conventional grey colored fur. This green cat caused messybeast.com to post an April Fool's day article where they discuss the genetics of green. From what I can tell, other articles talking about green cat breeds have been taken from that April Fool's day article, and a naturally green cat does not exist. Maybe one day there will be a mutation that will create a cute green cat, but for how I'm happy with all the beautiful cat colors we already have!

What do you think? Have you ever seen a green cat?
